A quick blog post before I go away for a few days.
This is a typical John Bell hymn, one of his earlier ones dating from 1989. Like many of his, it uses a memorable pentatonic Scottish folk tune, and inspiring words in contemporary language. In its four verses it focuses on Jesus as God and man, his personal call to follow him as individuals and as a community, the work of the Holy Spirit, a commitment to diversity and inclusion in the Church, and (in the optional last verse) the centrality of the communion table as a symbol of God’s love for us and ours for each other. If you want a hymn that distils liberal evangelical Christianity into a few verses, look no further.
